PRESS RELEASE.; PLANT TREES TO REDUCE DESERTIFICATION AND SOIL EROSION

The All Farmers' Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Katsina State chapter, has urged the people of the state to plant trees to reduce desertification and soil erosion in the state.
The State AFAN Chairman, Rt. Hon. Ya'u Umar Gwajo-Gwajo, made the call in a statement made available to newsmen in Katsina.
He noted that the effects of cutting down trees include global warming and extreme heat, delayed rainfall, desert encroachment, soil erosion and low agricultural production.
Gwajo-gwajo recalled that former Northern leaders such as the Premier of the Northern region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and traditional leaders such as Emir's also planted trees and shelter belts to guard against desertification, noting that the trees they planted are still being beneficial to the people.
While urging farmers and other residents to emulate the gesture, he also warned people against cutting down trees without planting new ones which pollutes the environment.
The AFAN Chairman also solicited for more support from the Katsina State government on behalf of the association, to enable it plant more trees for the benefit of farmers and the environment.
He said the association is leading a campaign to encourage residents of Katsina State that whenever they cut down one tree, they should plant three trees, in order to revive green vegetation and agricultural land in the state.
He also noted that tree planting is an Islamic injunction which was encouraged by Prophet Muhammad and it attracts huge rewards from Almighty Allah.
